Today, 10/9/2024, a new storm, Major Hurricane Milton, is heading toward Florida and is expected to pass just south of Tampa and Orlando. It will bring strong winds, heavy rain, and a dangerous and deadly storm surge of 10-15 feet to the coast around Tampa on Wednesday night. Residents will wake up on Thursday morning or make the drive back to their homes to assess the damage caused by the storm. The damage they face may be overwhelming, and they will realize that they need help to recover from the storm, some more quickly than others.
Many of you have asked how you can help. Here are ways you can help:
1. Donate money to the impacted Rotary Zones 33/34 directly.
3. Volunteer to answer phones for Crisis Cleanup as part of Disaster Aid USA. (most needed at this time)
One effective way for families in need to seek assistance is by registering their needs on Crisis Cleanup. Crisis Cleanup is a free service provided to communities following a disaster, aimed at assisting non-profit organizations in navigating the aftermath and identifying families in need of assistance. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, over 23000 individuals called the Crisis Cleanup Hotline to request assistance from non-profit organizations serving in the area.
One way you can assist families affected by the storm in Milton on Thursday morning is by volunteering as an operator with Crisis Cleanup. We anticipate a high volume of calls from storm victims in the days and weeks ahead, and we want to help them by shining the light on their needs so that others can respond.
You can assist from your home any day between 8 AM and 7:30 PM central time. There's no need to schedule a shift, as you can work whenever you have the time. All you need is a computer and internet access, and the training is available online, in both English and Spanish!
Once an account is created, email me at amyk5910dg2324@gmail.com and I will add you to Crisis Cleanup where you will create a user profile and take a 15-minute training on how to take calls requesting disaster cleanup.

Merrill Green became a Bryan Rotary Club member in 1974 under the classification Education-Athletic Director. He served in many capacities but most notably as weekly song leader, Club President, then as 5910 District Governor in 1994-1995. He was a Paul Harris Fellow +2 and gifted a Paul Harris Fellowship to his beloved wife, Bonnie, during his year as District Governor. Fellow Rotarians who played football under his guidance during their high school days still called him "Coach" and his life epitomized the Rotary motto "Service Above Self ". His genuine care and concern for others, ready smile, and positive outlook will be greatly missed.
Merrill loved his community and his fellow Rotarians. He sang for 25 years with the local Barbershop quartet, Sounds Ok, and cherished all the relationships with this special group of men. Merrill was honored to have served for twelve years as a Bryan ISD school board member; serving a term as President of the Board. Merrill loved to play golf and once said, “I always thought it was the game I loved, but it hit me one day that it was really the people I played with that was the real reason I enjoyed golf; it was the friendship/fellowship.”
He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene where he gave his life to the Lord early as a child and grew in God’s grace, wisdom and mercy throughout his life. He wanted to serve the Lord through sharing community with others. He felt so loved and wanted the community to know how they have blessed him by all the rich and God ordained relationships.
The Bryan ISD Athletic Department will be honoring the life of Coach Merrill Green at the October 4 Bryan High School football game vs. Copperas Cove. Coach Green's family and close friends will be recognized on the field at 6:45 p.m., and the football team will be wearing special MG stickers on their helmets.

The documentary is a moving portrait of a veteran using his own painful journey with PTSD to find healing for himself, and to pave a smoother path for veterans returning to civilian life. From director Glenn Holsten, producer Chayne Gregg, and executive producer Robert Irvine, HELL OR HIGH SEAS is an adventure film with a deep, universal message about perseverance and hope.

Thank you very much for your club’s strong support of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and, in particular, for hosting inbound students in past years.
Due to the pandemic, at this time no one knows for sure if we will be able to have the exchange program in the school year 2021-22. To insure places for our own young people who want to study abroad as Rotary Youth Exchange Students in 2021-22, tentative agreements are already being made to host students coming here from other countries.
In order for us to be prepared if exchanges do happen, we urgently need your assurance that your club will host again in the coming Rotary year.

It is an unparalleled way for young people to discover who they are, develop self-reliance, and while they are at it, to discover the world around them. They learn how the people of the world think and what they value – and they teach others about their own culture. But why should it matter to the rest of us? Learning how other people think and what they value is critical to solving the problems that face our communities and our world. What better way for a young future leader to get started on this task than to live in another culture for a school year – or even a few weeks – as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student.
Please see the attached FAQ regarding this year's proposed bond for Bryan ISD. Please know I am available to answer questions or concerns regarding the bond.
As part of House Bill 3 passed by the 86th Texas Legislature in 2019, all ballot language for school bond elections MUST include the statement, "This is a property tax increase." However, the Bryan ISD 2020 Bond will NOT increase the district's current tax rate.
(The current tax rate is $1.2325 and the tax rate with the 2020 Bond would be $1.2325.)
Thank you,

Bryan Rotary is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at the Red Cross office in Bryan (4244 Boonville Rd.) this Saturday, March 28th. As the Executive Director of the Heart of Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross, I am charged with ensuring our blood drives are safe and that we can continue to supply blood to our community and country regardless of natural disaster, warfare or pandemics. I am requesting assistance from my fellow Rotarians as I navigate this mission in unprecedented circumstances.
Disruptions to blood donations can lead to shortages and cause delays in essential medical care. As of Monday, 3/23/2020, about 7,000 blood drives, representing approximately 200,000 fewer blood donations, have been canceled in the U.S. due to COVID-19 concerns. As concerns about the coronavirus pandemic rise, you can help by simply communicating these vital messages to the public:
• Donating blood is a safe process and people should not be concerned about giving or receiving blood during this challenging time.
• More healthy donors are needed to give now to prevent a blood shortage.
• Keep scheduled blood drives, which will allow donors the opportunity to give blood. As an emergency preparedness organization, the Red Cross has also taken additional steps to ensure the safety of staff and donors at each Red Cross blood drive.
As we all know, COVID-19 has us taking extra precautions in an effort to curb the onset of cases. In line with that objective, the board has voted to cancel our club meetings for the remainder of March and April 1.
As you may have heard, there is a serious shortage of blood in the blood banks. No surprise, Rotarian AJ Renold and her team at the Red Cross have been working tirelessly to assemble a full team to be able to host a blood drive locally.
We will need 30 people who are able to donate blood to show up to donate on Saturday, March 28th. Further details on time and location will be forthcoming. In the meantime, please download the "Blood Donor American Red Cross" app to your phone so you can be prepared to give. Also, please encourage friends and family to do the same.
Rotarians, I'm so very honored to serve as your president and to call you friends. Should you have a need, please make it known to me so we can step up. We are the family of Rotary and we will get through this together.
Yours in Service,
Joan Quintana
2019-2020 President

At our Blood Drive on Wednesday, August 3, twenty-three Qualifying Donors contributed 36 Units of Blood which doubled the totals from our January drive. This impressive result occurred because so many donors volunteered to do automated donations through the apheresis machines. A special thanks to the many Bryan & Aggieland Rotarians who took time to donate and especially to Charles Gilliland for coordinating the drive! Check out the video link and we hope you can join us in January 2012 at our next blood drive.
