Did you know that Rotary has been working behind the scenes for decades fighting polio by promoting and providing immunizations worldwide?  And, we have special partners in this effort like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which matches every dollar raised by Rotary with $2!! Your donation goes further through Bryan Rotary Club Charity Corp.
Polio is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Many people in the United States no longer think about Polio as a health threat, but that’s because it has become a standard vaccination for children here thanks to scientists Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin who both worked independently to create polio vaccines. Google “polio” to see the images that haunt families who have been impacted by this paralyzing disease.
To end polio, we must stop transmission of the virus in the three countries where it remains endemic: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. We must also keep all other countries polio-free until we're certain it won't resurface. Up to 60 high-risk countries still operate large-scale immunization campaigns to protect children against polio. Only one other disease has ever been eradicated completely and that’s smallpox. YOU can help Rotary make polio the second disease eliminated from the face of the earth. It IS possible!
So, although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and its partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. That’s BILLION with a B. Join our countdown to making polio history by donating to the cause today. No child should have to suffer from this vaccine-preventable disease. Learn more about the journey to eradicate a disease at
