SARC - Charity of the Month

This week's speaker will be Leiha White from our Charity of the Month, the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC).
In 1981, members of the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office began to discuss the need for services for survivors of sexual assault. From these conversations, three individuals, Justice of the Peace Carolyn Hensarling, District Attorney Travis B. Bryan, III, and Assistant District Attorney Carolyn Ruffino, founded the Brazos County Rape Crisis Center, Inc., a non-profit, private corporation.
In 1982, the Center began to train volunteers and officially opened the doors for services in October of 1983. Since that time, the Center has trained over 1,000 volunteers, established strong community partnerships, conducted training and educational workshops, and assisted thousands of survivors with crisis intervention services.
In 2008, the organization rebranded to the Sexual Assault Resource Center or SARC and began serving the entire Brazos Valley region including Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington Counties.
SARC continues to expand its services and access for survivors of sexual violence and works to end sexual violence in our seven-county region through our education and prevention work.
