Habitat for Humanity Guatemala - Healthy Homes

Please join us in learing more about the Bryan Rotary/Habitat for Humanity Global Village service trip to Guatemala January 4-12, 2020.

  • Bryan Rotary volunteers will be joining our local Habitat for Humanity chapter on a Global Village trip to Antigua, Guatemala. Global Village trips are international trips organized by Habitat for Humanity to support Habitat affiliates around the world. On this Global Village trip, we will be participating in Habitat for Humanity Guatemala's Healthy Homes program. Habitat for Humanity Guatemala partners with low-income families to build homes. However, many families in Guatemala live in abject poverty and do not qualify for homeownership program. Habitat Guatemala has developed a Healthy Homes program that partners with these families to improve their living environment by making incremental changes that make substantial impacts on their health. This program builds smokeless stoves, dig latrines and assembles water filters for extremely low-income families in Guatemala
  • We will be assisting Habitat staff with the stoves, latrines and water filters.
  • During this one week trip, we will be helping multiple families improve their living environments. The stoves and latrines usually take only a day to make, so the impact will benefit multiple families and their extended families who often share living quarters by the end of the week. The smokeless stoves especially impact the women and children who spend many hours each day cooking over, oftentimes, an open fire. We expect these families will experience less smoke-related and digestive illnesses.
  • We will be going as part of Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity's Global Village team. They will be providing leadership in organizing and facilitating the trip for the Rotarians.
  • The program donation is $1,991 per person, which includes all trip expenses other than airfare.  We will be submitting a Rotary District Grant in August to request funding to defray some of the expenses for Bryan Rotarians.
