Carrie Hurt (T Getterman - Program Chair)
Better Business Bureau Serving the Heart of Texas

This is the largest BBB in the world.  It includes Austin, San Antonio, Waco, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Victoria, Midland/Odessa, Bryan/College Station and East Texas, and Fort Worth.  Carrie has served as the interim head of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, and has done everything from interviewing Oprah Winfrey to ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.  She is the most dynamic leader that I have ever worked with, and I have worked with a lot of people in leadership positions.

Carrie has merged seven formerly independent BBBs to create the Heart of Texas BBB, which serves 105 counties in Texas and supports more than 10 million consumers. The Heart of Texas BBB has more than 17,000 Accredited Businesses, making it the largest BBB in North America.

Under her leadership, the Heart of Texas BBB has been named a top workplace by the Austin American-Statesman, as well as a top 50 Best Non-Profits to work for by the The Non-Profit Times in 2017 and 2011–2014. BBB was also one of 100 Best Places to Work For in Texas in 2015 and 2016. BBB has won the Marshall A. Mott Award for outstanding communications four times and numerous awards in all areas of BBB work.

In 2016, Carrie was named the best small business CEO in Austin, Texas, by the Austin Business Journal. Carrie received the 2013 AT&T Executive Leadership Award from the Austin Chamber of Commerce and in 2011, she was named a Woman of Influence by the Austin Business Journal. She was honored with the “Yellow Rose of Texas” award from Texas Governor Rick Perry in 2009, which recognizes outstanding Texas women for their significant contributions to Texas.

Carrie has served as the interim president/CEO at the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) from 2012–2013, the Tulsa BBB from 2015–2016 and the Fort Worth BBB in 2016 while simultaneously leading the Heart of Texas BBB. She is the 2012 BBB Operating Committee (BOC) Meritorious Award winner, and in 2013, the CBBB Board created an annual BBB brand award in her name. Carrie also served as BOC chair twice.

While serving as the CEO of the international organization, the CBBB won the ASAE Summit Award; the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Telework Award; the Minister of Consumer Affairs’ Prize for a joint partnership with Japan to resolve cross border disputes; and 12 MarCom awards. She championed the creation of BBB in Mexico City, visiting with business leaders and embassies in the U.S. and Mexico. Carrie recognized the BBB brand’s Centennial anniversary in 2012 by ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery.

Carrie began her BBB career in 1993 as the public relations manager at the Beaumont BBB. She joined the BBB Austin team in 1995 as communications director and was named vice president in 1998. In March 2003, Carrie was named president and CEO by the BBB Board of Directors.

Carrie is a native Texan and attended Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University. In 2013, the university recognized her with an Alumni Achievement Award and a Stelos Award for outstanding leadership. She also serves as a member of the Texas State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Advisory Council.
